What Home Education Looks Like - 3rd July 2017

We had one of our museum days last week with first the Butterflies Exhibition at the Natural History...

Then our usual noodle lunch (museum day tradition!) followed by the Robots Exhibition at the Science Museum.

We then took a good few hours in Wonderlab (coolest part of the museum on a very hot day!) before heading home. Two very different exhibitions but both very interesting.

What Home education Looks Like - 16th August 2013

A trip to the grandparents' (whose nasturtiums are more abundant than ours!) meant a chance to stock up our butterfly jar with caterpillars.

It's difficult to spot them all but we took away a jar crammed full of cabbage white caterpillars, plus a couple of unidentified green ones. Oh and the little yellow dots are eggs for even more! Can't wait to see how many butterflies we get.

Setting our butterflies free!

We had a very successful first ever try at studying the life cycle of cabbage whites. I think our "butterfly jar" will be in use for many years to come :)

Caterpillar Update

Not the best photos but we have chrysalises!

5 so far, and 3 caterpillars left to turn. The one that turned first has already turned a darker brown colour, so I suspect that another week may even see them ready to emerge. Very exciting!

What Home education looks like - 31st August 2012

More biology, this time learning about caterpillars!

We have lots of nasturtiums in the garden and noticed many caterpillars on them so decided to try raising some to butterflies. The jar is actually meant to hold a candle but seemed large enough and we've put a piece of fine mesh over the top held down with one of Papaya's old elastic hairbands (with a butterfly on it appropriately enough). We used these instructions to help (Rearing Caterpillars) and took cautionary advice from another home ed friend who tried it herself only to discover the caterpillars had become hosts to millions of fly eggs.... ew!! We only managed to get two of the same type so plan to keep our eyes open to find some other varieties. Fingers crossed they pupate and emerge as butterflies!

#UPDATE#
Using this website (Identify Caterpillars) we think we've identified them as Large Whites! Let's wait and see......
